Prime minister makes admission during visit to London hospital in face of opposition to GPs policy David Cameron spoke yesterday of concern within his own family over the government's planned reforms of the health service, admitting publicly that even his brother-in-law was not convinced by the changes. Dr Carl Brookes is married to the prime minister's sister Tania and works as a cardiologist in Basingstoke for the North Hampshire NHS trust. Speaking during a visit to a London hospital, Cameron raised the topic himself, telling assembled doctors and nurses: "My brother-in-law is a hospital doctor and he says 'you're giving too much power to the GPs, and hospitals will be disadvantaged.'" Meanwhile, more than half of GPs responding to a survey by the Royal College of General Practitioners said they were concerned that the proposed health reforms would not lead to improvements in care for patients. NHS applauded for boost in quality of hospital care

British Medical Journal pinpoints areas of improvement in safety standards The quality and safety of much of the care offered by the NHS is good and getting better, health experts report in tomorrow's British Medical Journal. Researchers said: "Baseline performance across hospitals was already high on many criteria relating to quality, leaving little room for improvement". They cited a strong performance by the NHS in areas such as stopping blood clots, improving handwashing by staff, monitoring seriously ill patients' vital signs, reducing hospital-acquired infections, and giving steroids promptly to those with breathing problems. David Cameron and the health secretary, Andrew Lansley, have recently criticised the NHS for not offering the same quality of care in key areas, such as cancer and heart problems, as other European countries, notably France, although doctors and the King's Fund thinktank have challenged their claims. The Westminster model is geared to single-party government. Yet the growth in support for third parties and the decline in the number of marginal seats mean that hung parliaments and coalition governments have become more likely. They will be even more likely if the alternative vote , a preferential electoral system likely to help the Liberal Democrats, the second choice of many voters is endorsed by voters in the forthcoming referendum. There have of course been peacetime coalitions before from 1918-22 under Lloyd George , and Ramsay MacDonald's national government in 1931 .
