Second Belfast bomb alert in a week leads to 50 homes being evacuated

Security alert comes after nearby Antrim Road was shut for three days

A second bomb alert in a week in north Belfast has led to 50 homes being evacuated this afternoon.

Police said people had to be moved from houses on the city's Mountcollyer Avenue and some businesses on York Road today.

Army technical officers are at the scene, and York Road has been closed from Seaview Street to Brougham Street.

Crosscollyer evangelical church has been opened to accommodate those who have had to leave their homes.

The security alert comes less than 24 hours after the nearby Antrim Road had to be shut off for nearly three days because of an abandoned bomb. The device was found inside a hijacked Volkswagen people carrier across the road from Antrim Road police station. The dissident republican group glaigh na hireann was blamed for leaving that bomb in the area.
