Four die in Great Yarmouth industrial accident
Police investigating circumstances surrounding incident at offshore engineering company Claxton Engineering
Four workers died yesterday afternoon in an industrial accident in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.
Emergency services were called to offshore engineering company Claxton Engineering but the four men, who have not yet been named, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, which happened as construction work was being carried out on the building. Reports pointed to a steel structure that may have collapsed on them.
Detective Chief Inspector Neil Luckett, from the Norfolk and Suffolk major investigation team, said: "This is a tragic event and we will be working closely with the Health and Safety Executive to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
"This may be a lengthy process. Our thoughts are with the families of the men who died today."
The company, which provides engineering services for the offshore drilling industry, issued a statement last night saying it was "deeply saddened".
"We can confirm that an accident occurred this afternoon where construction work on a new facility is being carried out by external contractors ... " Claxton said. "The company is fully co-operating with the investigation. Everybody at Claxton is deeply saddened by what has occurred and the company's thoughts and sympathy are with the families."
